About the event
Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday celebrated on June 19th each year in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.
Historical Background
Emancipation Proclamation: Issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it declared all slaves in Confederate-held territory to be free.
Delayed Enforcement: The Proclamation was not enforced in some areas until Union troops could take control, leading to a delay in freedom for many enslaved people.
June 19, 1865: Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, leading to the liberation of the last enslaved individuals in the United States.
